Caritas Manila has announced they will donate $25,000 to help rebuild Radio Caritas – the Catholic Radio station destroyed in the earthquake.
Following the January 12, Magnitude 7 earthquake that devastated Haiti, Caritas Manila and its social-communication partner, Radio Veritas 846, launched the Caritas sa Veritas Damay Kapanalig-Haiti Telethon to call for an outpouring of support and aid for the people of Haiti. International news agencies reported that over 200,000 Haitians lost their lives and over 1 million lost their homes due to the earthquake.
Most Rev. Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti, confirmed receipt of the donation from Caritas Manila and Radio Veritas 846. “Since it’s a joint effort between Caritas Manila and Radio Veritas, I will split the $50,000—$25,000 will be used to repair our Catholic radio station, and the other half for emergency help like children’s medicines and for temporary schooling,” relayed the Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti.
Radio Soleil, the main national Catholic radio station in Haiti, and most of Haiti’s buildings and infrastructure were destroyed by the earthquake.
The P2.3-million donation to Caritas Haiti is an initial monetary support for the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts in Haiti. We, at Caritas Manila and Radio Veritas 846, hope and pray that support and donations for Haiti will continue. Caritas Manila will continue to raise funds for our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
