In a field next to a white farmhouse just west of this Putnam County village, a nearly 200-foot radio tower lies in pieces, waiting for the ground to dry out so that a crane can raise it into place.

Once the tower is erected, what’s expected to be the first Catholic radio station in the Diocese of Toledo should be on the air.

Holy Family Radio, with the broadcast frequency 88.9 FM, has the call letters WJTA, for “Jesus The Answer,” Jim Lammers, assistant director, said. The nonprofit station plans to broadcast Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) programming and work in local announcements and live broadcasts of Masses from parishes in the listening area.

While Holy Family Radio may be the first Catholic radio station in the diocese, it won’t be alone for long.

Toledo-based Annunciation Radio is expected to go on the air later this summer, Deacon Michael Learned, president, said. Annunciation Radio plans a second station in Sandusky by the year’s end.

“By the end of the year we’ll have all of the north coast covered with Catholic radio, and, with the Dieterings’ help, we’ll be down in that area too,” Mr. Learned said.

“You take one of my cows, and I’ll take two of yours.”In Southern Sudan, this way of solving problems is much too common. Although Sudan’s 22-year second civil war ended in 2005, many people still turn to violence when disputes arise. The Catholic Church believes it’s time for this to change.

“Sudan has been undergoing 50 years of conflict,” says Sister Cecilia Sierra Salcido, a Comboni Missionary sister and director of Radio Bakhita. Sister Cecilia says this has caused many people to believe that retribution is good and that killing out of revenge is justified. “It’s good to challenge this worldview and invite people to understand the world in different ways.”

Beating the Drums for Peace

In February 2010, the Sudan Catholic Radio Network began Beat the Drums for Peace. This radio project—part of Catholic Relief Services’ $4-million initiative to support peace in Sudan—consists of 3-to-5-minute programs that share messages of peace and ways to peacefully resolve conflicts.

Between February and April, the project developed 10 messages about trust, peace, justice and individual responsibility. Radio Bakhita in the southern capital of Juba produces the messages in English. The station then works with six other Catholic stations to translate the messages into 10 languages, including variations of Arabic, Dinka, Nuer and Hausa.

A civil rights coalition that boasts the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) among its members has published a 30-second ad endorsing Solicitor General Elena Kagan, who is pro-abortion and homosexualist, for the Supreme Court.The advertisement, which lists Kagan’s various achievements while President Obama describes the ideal Supreme Court nominee in a voiceover, is available on the website of The Coalition for Constitutional Values, a project of the Leadership Counsel for Civil and Human Rights (LCCHR). The Coalition for Constitutional Values also re-published a statement praising Kagan from the Human Rights Campaign, a leading homosexualist group in the U.S.

The pro-abortion and homosexualist lobbying activities of LCCHR, whose members must pay a $1000-minimum annual membership fee, are well-documented. On its website, the group lists the “right to privacy and choice” of abortion as among women’s rights, and pushes for same-sex “marriage” and other homosexualist legislation as a matter of civil “rights.”

Two Moroccan terrorist suspects deported from Italy last month were allegedly plotting to kill Pope Benedict XVI, Italian weekly Panorama claims in its latest issue to be released on Friday. Mohammed Hlal and Errahmouni Ahmed were students at the University of Perugia until their repatriation to Morocco on 29 April.

“Hlal wanted to kill the Vatican’s head of state (the pope), saying he was ready to assassinate him and gain his place in paradise,” Italy’s interior minister Roberto Maroni wrote in the expulsion order authorising Hlal and Ahmed’s deportations, cited by Panorama.

Anti-terror police in Perugia intercepted Hlal discussing his plans to carry out attacks and readiness to obtain explosives for the attacks during a series of tapped telephone conversations, according to Panorama.

Redeemer Radio, 1450-AM, has launched the public phase of a $900,000 capital campaign that would allow it to fully equip its new studios and to reach a wider audience.

Station officials announced the “Building Faith, Sharing Christ” fund drive Tuesday in conjunction with a visit by Bishop Kevin Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend to bless the station’s new studios in an office park at 4618 E. State Blvd., Suite 200, just east of Coliseum Boulevard. The station has been located at 4705 Illinois Road.

The private portion of the capital campaign already has raised $569,000, or 63 percent of the goal, station staff member Patty Becker said in a news release. Rhoades and his predecessor, Bishop John M. D’Arcy, will serve as honorary co-chairs of the fund drive.

Raising the $900,000 will allow the station to:

♦Complete the move to its new, larger location, which provides the space needed for expansion.

♦Develop and air a locally produced weekday program intended to inspire Catholics and non-Catholics in their faith.

♦Add ownership of an FM noncommercial radio station, which will allow Redeemer Radio to broadcast programming to many areas of the diocese currently unable to pick up its AM signal.

♦Pay off the $450,000 remaining on the initial loan used to start the station in January 2006, saving nearly $70,000 a year in principal and interest payments.

Today’s rainy weather didn’t stop community members from welcoming Redeemer Radio, a Fort Wayne Catholic radio station, to their new home on East State Blvd. Bishop Kevin Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend was there to bless the new facilities.  

In addition, everyone in attendance took part in the worship and toured the new radio station, which is nearly twice as large as the previous location. There was singing, prayer, scripture, and refreshments for those attending the blessing.

“I was so happy to learn we had catholic radio here in the diocese,” says Bishop Rhoades. “It’s a great instrument of communication, especially for me as the Bishop.”

Redeemer Radio is  holding a Family Fun Day at the new studios this Saturday May 15!

With an enthusiastic “Buenos dias!” the Spanish Catholic radio program went live on the air.The four hosts, a mix of radio veterans and novices, a priest and laymen, sat knee to knee in the small studio. They prayed, read the Gospel, laughed, sang and answered callers during the hour show.

“There are a lot of non-Catholics listening, and they love the show,” said Juan Diaz, 36, who with nearly five years in radio is the most experienced behind the microphone.

The daily show, “Neustra Fe” (“Our Faith”), is an initiative by the Atlanta Archdiocese to reach the Hispanic community. By some estimates, upwards of 50,000 Latinos attend Catholic churches on Sundays around Atlanta. That leaves an estimated 300,000 who are not in the pews despite coming from heavily Catholic countries, said Jairo Martinez, the Hispanic ministry director for the archdiocese. The surge of Latinos in North Georgia is one reason for the growth of the Catholic Church here.

 The church is taking its message to places it hasn’t been before. A Catholic Mass is now part of the regular programming at the Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters, a local cable TV channel. And thousands of drivers on Atlanta’s Downtown Connector highway see billboards promoting the church’s support for marriage and life issues.

The radio station for 610 AM WPLO Grayson/Atlanta, home for Our Faith, is a modest building tucked behind a mobile home park on the edge of Lawrenceville’s historic district. Its broadcast covers Gwinnett County and some 43 other counties in North Georgia, the hub of the Latino community in Georgia, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In what may be his first public statement on the situation of 88 pro-life protesters arrested on campus last May, University of Notre Dame President Fr. John Jenkins has suggested that the protesters deserve to continue facing up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine because they were unruly and led by individuals who “threatened peace and order.”The protesters, known as the “Notre Dame 88″ (ND88) were arrested for trespassing on Notre Dame’s campus as they peacefully prayed or otherwise symbolized their disagreement with the university for honoring President Obama with the commencement address and an honorary law degree May 17.

Witnesses state that the pro-lifers were arrested while pro-Obama protesters were allowed to roam free – which the ND88′s defense attorney says indicates the pro-lifers were selectively punished simply because of their message.

Guadalupe Radio Network is set to launch its 24/7 English-language Catholic programming on WMET-AM in Washington, DC, on May 5. The station currently airs brokered programming.
